Let’s take a sneak peek look inside the Part Time Pilot Private Pilot Online Ground School to see why it’s the top-rated online ground school by student pilots.
First off, you can log in on any device. The course is 100% mobile-friendly and also comes with a load of offline content which we will talk about here in a bit. Everything in the membership is organized by courses to easily navigate each of the features in those courses. To get your endorsement for the FAA written exam, there is a two-step two-course process. Step one is all the lessons of the ground school and step two is a series of practice tests, test reports, and review questions until you are ready to score highly on the real exam. This process has led to a 99.9% pass rate for our students on the FAA written exam.
Let’s first check out the online ground school lessons and what those look like inside our step one course. Now you can navigate to any lesson using the syllabus on the course page or at the bottom of any lesson. We cover the entire Airman Certificate Standards in our courses and the lessons are organized to optimize your learning and build upon one another. Let’s go further and take a look at what the lessons look like. At the top of each lesson is an audio version of that lesson. These are made exclusively for audio, meaning that any visual aids in the course are described in detail to be understood over audio. It’s just not a replica of the audio in the videos. But the audio lessons get even better. Each member of the online ground school, upon signing up, will receive an exclusive invite to join our VIP podcast. This will allow students to listen to all their lessons agree on their favorite podcast app to be able to easily control, speed up, slow down, connect to Bluetooth devices, and even download the lessons for offline learning anywhere you go. Each lesson is also written in plain English with visual aids, diagrams, and step-by-step examples. Throughout the written lessons are video lessons for those visual learners, allowing students to learn by reading, listening, or watching, or all the above, whatever works best for them. Also included in each course and lesson is a digital notes feature, allowing students to take and save notes on AHA moments or things they want to remember that they can then download and print for themselves, which we’ll show you later. And another invaluable resource on every lesson is an AI-powered instructor chat trained on the course and the FAA content. This chatbot, plus our support being available seven days a week and our online study groups is one of the most mentioned items in the reviews we get from students. Being able to get your questions answered at all times is key to efficient and successful learning.
Continuing on the lesson content, we can see the step-by-step real-life and FAA written type examples we are so big on here at Part Time Pilot. I myself learn best through detailed examples and so you’ll see a ton of them in our course. At the bottom of each lesson is also an FAA test prep summary of the lesson for those students that want to run through each lesson again before their exam and key in on those factors that need to be remembered for the written exam, which is another reason our students pass at a 99.9% rate. And finally, at the bottom of each lesson is a quiz with custom questions and FAA practice type questions to reinforce a student’s learning. Quiz questions can include images. And if you need to stop a quiz early, simply click the exit quiz button. And when you’re ready to come back to the quiz, click resume the quiz button and start right where you left off with no progress lost. Once done with a quiz, you get to review each question and see why you got them wrong with our detailed answer explanations.
Once a student finishes all the lessons of the ground school, they move on to step two of the course, which includes three FAA practice tests curated to best see where you stand on your progress. After a student completes those tests, they will receive an email with the results of the test and a customized report from one of our CFIs that includes lessons to review, tips to remember, and more review questions on the areas that they struggle. If a student’s score on the test suggests that they are ready for the real FAA exam, they will also receive their endorsement at this time. If not, have no fear. You will simply repeat this process with more practice tests we make available to you until you are ready to pass the real thing.
Now that we have the base of our ground school and test prep covered, let’s take a look at the bonus features also included in one lifetime price for our students. Now, we have two mini bonus courses on how to hack your studying and how to navigate becoming a pilot and saving money while doing it. And for those students that want to start practicing FAA practice questions right away, they can use their bonus digital flashcard feature that has over 1,200 FAA written practice test questions, answers, and answer explanations. The next bonus course is your bonus downloads and video vault course. This course includes a ton of PDF downloads that you can download and keep for yourself on any device. These include some of the FAA documents, like the 5 Step Study hack, for example, but also a ton of our own PDFs. The bonus course also includes the recording of every single live lesson or webinar we have done for our members so that they can be rewatched if they were missed. But let’s take a look at some of these downloads. There are literally hundreds of dollars worth of bonus downloads inside this course, like our ultimate private pilot test prep book PDF you see here with visual aids, summarized topics, examples, and practice questions perfect for studying on the go or offline. Or study calendars to help you keep accountable and track your lesson progress. Or a cross-country planning checklist that tells you step by step what to do in order to plan a cross-country flight. or a cross-country planning naval log both PDF version to be printed or an Excel version that you can take and manipulate yourself or some downloads that you can actually take and put in your kneeboard while you’re flying like our crosswind and headwind quick reference charts that are very, very handy. So that’s been all the content, but there are also some more helpful features of the membership that I want to share with you. First is the grades tab where you can monitor your progress, view your average grades, and even click on old quizzes to review the old quizzes and review the questions that you got wrong. Your grade reports can also be downloaded as a PDF for your flight school, flight instructor, parents, or whoever is asking for it. Speaking of flight instructors, Part Time Pilot offers free access to flight instructors and the ability for flight instructors to be linked to their students in what we call flight training groups inside our system. Instructors can then click on any of their students and monitor their progress, view their grades, review their tests with them, and much, much more. Your membership will also hold your endorsement when you receive it so that you can easily download it as a PDF and take it into the testing center, which you’ll need. And finally, I mentioned the digital notes feature earlier. From the main student dashboard, these notes can be accessed, managed, and even downloaded to be printed for yourself to keep on any single device. As you can see, the ground school is full of features designed to help make your studying easier, more effective, and more efficient. But honestly, none of this matters if the actual instruction sucks. It doesn’t matter how good a video looks or how fancy a user interface is if the content being taught or the way the content is being taught is bad. For this, I recommend looking at reviews from other student pilots who have already been through our course already because they are the best people to tell you about the quality of our instruction, how much they’re actually retaining and learning from our content. So, to view our reviews, just go to trustpilot.com and search for Part Time Pilot. That’s Trust Pilot, trustpilot.com and search for Part Time Pilot.
Watch the video above to get a detailed tour of the Part Time Pilot Private Pilot Online Ground School. Our Sport Pilot and IFR Online Ground Schools are built the same way with the same combination of features but tailored to those certificates.

The number 1 way to ensure your success in becoming a pilot is by properly managing your time and money.
And the easiest way to properly manage your time & money is by doing ground school before it’s too late and ACTUALLY understanding the material
5 years ago I saw NO ONE mentoring unsuspecting students on the traps in flight training that was costing them $1000s.
This is why I created the Part Time Pilot Online Ground School.
The ground school was created with these ideas at the heart of our mission statement:
What is the Best Online Ground School?
Over the years, I have seen 1000s of student pilots go through ground and flight training. I have heard their complaints and their praises about what makes a good ground school experience.
I have taken that knowledge, included it with my own experience becoming a pilot, an instructor, and an aerospace engineer, and created the Ultimate Buyer’s Guide for student pilots looking for the best ground school option.
The guide breaks down the best options across several categories, including the best for affordability, the best for visual learners, the best for mobile users on the go, and more.
Here are some frequently asked questions about the topic of online ground school.
Yes! You can do ground school online. The vast majority of online ground schools will also provide you with an endorsement for your FAA Written Exam upon completion of the course as well. You will need this endorsement, as well as a valid ID in order to be able to take the exam. The endorsement just needs to be signed by a certificated ground or flight instructor that knows that you have done the necessary studying and are ready to take the exam.
At an online ground school, such as Part Time Pilot, you will go through a series of practice tests and test prep to determine whether you are ready for the exam before receiving your endorsement straight to your email.
Online Ground Schools are very popular because of the fact that you can study at the convenience of your own home or wherever you have internet. Some Online Ground Schools, like Part Time Pilot, even provide access to instructors in study groups, over the phone, or over email for you to get your questions answered when you have them.
There are many options for Online Ground School these days. The best online ground school is the one that works best at helping you understand that content. Students should look at the type of lessons provided (written lessons, video lessons and audio lessons), the ability to get their questions answered from a real-life instructor, and reviews from student pilots when looking into the best online ground school for themselves. Many Online Ground Schools provide free trials (like Part Time Pilot’s here) that you can try out before purchasing.
There are many good options out there for Online Ground School but only one has the combination of features, ability to get your questions answered 7 days a week, and is the #1 rated in terms of customer reviews – Part Time Pilot. Other options include Pilot Institute, Kings, Gold Seal and FinerPoints.
The amount of time it takes to finish an Online Ground School is up to you, the student. Each online ground school is required to teach you all the knowledge from the Airmen Certificate Standards from the FAA. This document details all the knowledge, skills and areas of proficiency required to achieve a pilot certificate.
The amount of time it will take you to finish learning all the required content depends on how quickly you learn and how much time you can dedicate each day to studying. On average, is takes students about 3 months to complete online ground school with some students completing it in as quickly as 1 month and others taking 6 months to even a year.
Part Time Pilot provides each of our students with study tracking calendars they can download to keep track of their progress. There are different calendars based off of how much time a student can dedicate each day to studying (30 min, 1 hour or 2 hour) and each calendar shows the lessons the student should complete each day to stay on track.
There are many options for FAA Ground Schools. Ground Schools can be held in person with lectures at a flight school or college where they cost anywhere from $400 to $1400 or more.
Ground Schools can be in the form of 1-on-1 instruction with an instructor that charges a student $40,$50, $60 or even $70 an hour depending on the local market for instructors. Students typically need 30 to 40 hours or more of ground school which puts the price of 1-on-1 instruction anywhere from $1200 to $2800.
Finally, Ground Schools can be Online. Online Ground Schools range from $150 to $500.
In the grand scheme of your training, the cost of ground school is rather insignificant to the total cost of flight training (~$10,000 or more for private pilot). It is more important to find a ground school with good instruction, good features, lifetime access and the ability to get your questions answered, like Part Time Pilot.
No! However, it is highly recommended that you do it before flight training or before getting too far along in your flight lessons, but there is no requirement to do ground school before flight training.
The only requirement is that you have your FAA Written exam passed prior to your final Checkride flight test, and in order to take the FAA Written test you need to have an endorsement from a certified instructor who performed the ground training (or an online ground school) and believes you are ready for the test.
Any Ground School whether it is in-person instruction or online instruction should consist of all the required knowledge in the FAA’s Airmen Certificate Standards. This document details every piece of knowledge and every skill a student must become proficient at in order to earn their pilot certificate.
The ground school content changes depending on what pilot certificate the ground school is teaching (private, sport, IFR, commercial, etc.). For Private Pilot, students should be learning the following subject categories (these are the subjects included in the Part Time Pilot Online Ground School):
For online ground schools this content can be taught in the form of written lessons, video lessons or even audio lessons and should be reinforced with examples, visual aids, memory aids and quizzes. A good online ground school should teach the fundamental principles of each topic as well as provide test prep to prepare students for the FAA Written Exam.
