Flight Training Tools - New & Powerful for Student Pilots in 2026

TLDR

New age flight training tools are helping improve the results and performance of student pilot flight lessons. Digital tools using AI to provide 24/7 analysis and real-time coaching or feedback, GPS based tools for debriefing and analysis, electronic flight bags for easier flight planning and less cockpit task saturation, and more.

Flight training tools in the digital age are becoming more and more abundant. It can be a lot to keep up with all the new technology and tools coming out these days. The good news is that a lot of these tools are making learning to fly easier that is ever has been.

This post is meant to summarize our favorite tools to be used to improve your flight training experience and performance.

GPS Recording Tools

You can’t improve what you can’t measure. GPS & flight data recording tools are here to help you give you insights and actual data on your flight paths, altitudes, timing and coordination during cross-country flights and maneuvers.

These tools allow you to download and replay a 3D rendering of your flight so that you can review with your instructor where you keep messing up and how & when you can improve it. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Fly Orka
    • A flight training companion app and digital, 3D flight recorder designed for student pilots and pilots to track flights, improve skills and share data.
    • Features include 3D flight recordings, performance analysis, safety improvements, and community sharing & collaboration
    • Our favorite because it has a large emphasis on the community sharing & collaboration for improving safety of general aviation
    • Available on Android or Apple and requires no additional equipment
  • CloudAhoy
    • Another flight training companion app and digital, 3D flight recording designed for student pilots to track flights, improve skills and share data
    • Focuses more on the technical analysis and scoring tool for precision flying (has military applications)

ATC Communication Practice

One of the biggest hurdles for student pilots is to get over the fear of talking to Air Traffic Control (ATC). Getting over the fear of it, means having the confidence, and having the confidence means being well practiced.

Here are 3 tools we love for practicing ATC communications from the comfort of your own home, without the fear of failure to build that confidence:

  • LiveATC.Net
    • A free website where students can tune into live or recorded ATC radio from around the country
    • Sit and listen and put yourself in the shoes of the responding pilots as practice!
  • PlainEnglish ARSim App
    • Starting from beginner to more advanced ATC communications, the PlainEnglish App has a suite of short lessons and modules that take you step by step through learning ATC communications
    • You can even record your transmission practice and get feedback from the app
    • Also includes practice on all things communications including ATC signals, airport signs and markings
  • Part Time Pilot AI voice-to-voice ATC Simulator
    • Part Time Pilot has a real-time voice-to-voice AI-powered ATC simulator that acts as both ATC and a coach/instructor
    • Choose a scenario and difficulty level and the AI will provide you with a simulation scenario. Then, you play the role of the student, the AI plays the role of ATC. After your transmissions, the AI gives you feedback on what you did right and wrong
    • You can get the ATC sim and Part Time Pilot’s AI mock checkride sim as well in one low monthly price here

Electronic Flight Bags

Electronic flight bags or EFBs can replace traditional paper charts with digital systems that provide real-time weather, navigation and performance calculations.

Here are our favorite EFB options for general aviation pilots:

  • ForeFlight Mobile
    • Features a comprehensive suite including flight planning, global weather, hazard awareness, and digital logbooks.
    • Offers high-end tools like Synthetic Vision (3D terrain view) and geo-referenced approach charts to enhance situational awareness.
    • Is widely considered the dominant choice for iPad users in the US.
  • Garmin Pilot
    • Known for deep “panel-to-tablet” connectivity, allowing pilots to sync flight plans and engine data directly with Garmin avionics.
    • Features “SmartCharts” and a radial menu for quick access to tasks like graphical flight plan editing and airport info.
    • Unlike ForeFlight, it is available on both iOS and Android, making it a top choice for non-Apple users.

Checkride Prep Tools

Similar to talking to ATC, your checkride oral exam comes with its own performance anxiety. But nothing some good preparation and confidence cant overcome.

Here are some good digital tools that can get students prepped and confident for that checkride oral exam:

  • Part Time Pilot AI voice-to-voice Mock Checkride Simulator
    • Part Time Pilot has a real-time voice-to-voice AI-powered Oral Checkride simulator that acts as both Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) and a coach/instructor
    • The AI will provide you with a checkride scenario. Then, you play the role of the student, the AI plays the role of DPE. After your answers, the AI gives you feedback on what you did right and wrong
    • You can get the Mock Checkride sim and Part Time Pilot’s AI ATC sim as well in one low monthly price here
  • Checkride Binders
    • There are many checkride binder providers. You can find them on Amazon, Etsy or other similar outlets
    • One of the best ways to make a good impression on your Checkride is to have all your documents, flight plan and performance calculations organized neatly for your examiner
    • Checkride Binders provide you with step by step PDFs of exactly what you need to have in your binder and how to build it for the day of your checkride.

The number 1 way to ensure your success in becoming a pilot is by properly managing your time & money

And the easiest way to properly manage your time & money is by doing ground school before it’s too late and ACTUALLY understanding the material

5 years ago I saw NO ONE mentoring unsuspecting students on the traps in flight training that was costing them $1000s

This is why I created the Part Time Pilot Online Ground Schools

The ground schools were created with these ideas at the heart of our mission statement:

  • Mentoring students from start to finish
  • Providing content that saves time & money & provides a deep understanding

What is the Best Online Ground School?

Over the years, I have seen 1000s of student pilots go through ground and flight training. I have heard their complaints and their praises about what makes a good ground school experience.

I have taken that knowledge, included it with my own experience becoming a pilot, an instructor, and an aerospace engineer, and created the Ultimate Buyer’s Guide for student pilots looking for the best ground school option.

The guide breaks down the best options across several categories, including the best for affordability, the best for visual learners, the best for mobile users on the go, and more.
